About NDSD:
North Douglas School District is located in Drain, Oregon. Drain is a small, rural community in Douglas County. NDSD serves approximately 320 PK-12 students in two buildings—North Douglas High School and North Douglas Elementary/Middle School. As the hub of the community, North Douglas schools offer a wide range of learning and developmental opportunities for all students and their families. Through programs like CTE, music, fine arts, physical education, athletics, and student leadership, NDSD and its staff are committed to developing the whole child using a broad-based, holistic approach. As a small school community, NDSD is committed to providing the very best educational experience for all students. NDSD has a strong, comprehensive special education program while utilizing external organizations, such as Douglas ESD, for specialized attention. NDSD and its staff pride themselves in working together with all stakeholders to foster a safe, welcoming learning environment for all.
About the Drain Community:
Founded in 1887 by Charles Drain, the City of Drain is a small, incorporated community nestled among fir trees in northern Douglas County. While it is a quiet, isolated community, it is still within an hour of larger metropolitan areas such as Roseburg, Cottage Grove, Eugene and Springfield. With a population of just over 1,000 residents, Drain has a rich tradition of supporting its schools and young people. In 1883, the first school—Drain Normal School—was founded by the local Methodist Church. In 1958, the Drain Black Sox—an independent semi-professional baseball team—won the National Baseball Congress Championship. Spearheaded by long-time NDSD supporters Donna and Harold Woolley, local civic and business leaders fundraised to build a baseball stadium along with a war memorial park and swimming pool—which is now owned by the North Douglas Parks and Recreation District. The support, effort, and leadership from committed community members, like the Woolley's, directly contributed to the success of the Black Sox, and this same community support is still alive today for NDSD schools and its students. Along with NDSD, Drain has several civic and private organizations that support its residents, including North Douglas Parks and Recreation District, North Douglas Library District, City of Drain, North Douglas County Fire and EMS, North Douglas County Fair, and Drain Chamber of Commerce. Known as “The Gateway to the Pacific”, Drain is a hub for recreational activities such as hiking, camping, water sports, hunting and fishing.
COVID-19 has been detrimental to the learning and development of many of our students. NDSD staff has worked hard to create a plan to provide a safe learning environment—whether in-person or virtually—for all students.
